Our History

Where Do we Begin?

Where do we begin? Over 56 years ago with 80 acres and a calling!  Camp Carl made available for God to make the amazing happen.  Through the continual gracious provisions of Jesus Christ and the diligent efforts of His people, camp continues to be a place for effectively sharing the life changing truths about Jesus Christ to over 2000+ campers each summer.

Where are we Now?

We now have 315 acres, hire 120+ college students each summer and our eyes are on the Almighty with a humble urgent cry in our hearts, “Here are We”… Eager to seek the will of the Lord for the world He so loved!

As a ministry opportunity to train and develop young people for Christian service, and to provide an evangelistic avenue to reach the next generation, The Chapel began examining potential camping ministry.  The result of the search for a camp led The Chapel to purchase Y.W.C.A. camp in May of 1964.  It was appropriate that the newly acquired camp would be named Camp Carl, as a living memorial to the late Reverend Carl Burnham, Founder and Pastor of The Chapel.

Owned and operated by The Chapel since 1964, Camp Carl has a long history of providing summer camp experiences that are proven to be effective in sharing the message of Jesus in a life changing way to campers.  On June 28, 1964 the camp opened.  The eight weeks that followed can be described as “a demonstration of God’s blessing and faithfulness.”  Approximately 425 campers attended Camp Carl that first year, and 112 made decision to receive Christ as their Savior.

Throughout the years, individuals have contributed to camp in various means such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 4 additional spacious large cabins, gym and worship center, treehouses, maintenance and facility buildings, necessary equipment, scholarships,  funds for renovations and camp enhancements, plus countless hours of volunteer labor!

This brief history of Camp Carl provides a living illustration of what camp is continually striving to accomplish.  Members of The Chapel, The Trustee Board and members of the Pastoral Staff have purposed from the beginning of camp’s existence to make it a ministry designed to carry out The Great Commandment and The Great Commission in the lives of young people!

Meet Our Staff!

What We Believe

GOD is eternally existing in three co-equal persons – FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT. This is the Trinity.

JESUS CHRIST died as a substitutionary sacrifice for our sins, was buried, resurrected and ascended into Heaven.  He is present there as High Priest and Advocate for all believers. We have “blessed hope” in His imminent return.

THE HOLY SPIRIT convicts the world of sin, or righteousness, and of judgement. He is the life of every believer and empowers the preaching and teaching of the gospel–which is the good news of salvation and the kingdom of God as announced by Christ.

ICONS THE BIBLE

THE BIBLE consists of the Old and New Testaments. Verbally inspired of God and inerrant in the original writings, the Scriptures are the supreme and final authority.

PEOPLE were created in the image of God, but because they sinned, they incurred both physical and spiritual death–which is separation from God.  People are born with a sinful nature; all are sinners in thought, word, and deed.

ICONS PEOPLE
CROSS

SALVATION is given to all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith. Born again of the Holy Spirit, they become children of God and inherit eternal life.

THE CHURCH is the Body of Christ whose mission is to preach the Gospel to all the world.
