Leadership Staff
Unit Leaders are staff with past camp experience, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and spiritual maturity. They help lead our summer staff, take a deep dive into discipleship, and are a key part in the execution of Camp’s mission.
These positions will be offered to individuals throughout the application process who seem to demonstrate leadership ability or experience.
Staff Benefits
If you are opting to work the full nine-week summer, you are allowed to schedule one week of unpaid vacation during the summer. Any time-off requests put in after the start of the summer are not guaranteed to be granted. If you are hired to work a 3 or 6-week term, we ask that you refrain from scheduling anything during your time at Camp, including doctor appointments and school responsibilities. If a medical or family emergency comes up, we will be accommodating, but we will require documentation for your absence (doctor’s note, etc.)
Meals are provided during the camp week. The last full meal we provide for you is lunch on Friday. You are responsible for your own meals on the weekend, the first meal provided by camp is Sunday dinner. Our amazing Chef, Sandy, provides plenty of healthy options for each meal. We will provide gluten friendly options at every meal. We are NOT a peanut-free facility because campers may bring them in from home, however we do not serve any peanuts from our kitchen. We eat well at Camp Carl, just ask our past staff!
If you are a counselor, you will be housed in a cabin with your co-counselor. Each cabin has its own full bathroom. If you are in the yurts, there are bathrooms just steps away from your yurt.
If you are support staff, you will likely be housed with other staff in one of our retreat centers. You will likely share a room with 3-5 other staff members and have communal bathrooms.
We suggest you bring a small plastic drawer container to keep your personal belongings in all summer. We encourage you to bring pictures and small décor to make your space your own. These must be hung up with temporary means (tape, command hooks, thumbtacks, etc).
We also have a shower house attached to our gym that is available to everyone.
You get time off! All staff is off on weekends from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon (about 42 hours). Most staffers take this opportunity to head home and do laundry, run errands, go to church, REST, or maybe catch a movie. For those out-of-town staff, you can stay on the property for the weekends or, more commonly, be invited home with one of our local staff members!
Not only would we love for your younger siblings to come to Camp Carl, but they get to come for HALF OFF. Let’s repeat that: your sibling can get a 50% discount for a week of camp! Bonus!
Community at Camp Carl is authentic, real, and life-changing. You live and serve arm-and-arm with fellow eternity-focused people who LOVE each other, and the campers. We want to make sure all our staff are involved in intentional community, so once we know who our team is going to be, we will separate everyone into small discipleship groups that will meet together once a week. The community that you will gain over the course of your time at Camp Carl will enrich your life, not just for the summer, but also for years to come. We find that our staff members carry on friendships that last long after summer camp.
College Credit & Internships
It is possible to work at camp AND receive college credit. If you have an applicable field of study and would like to make your summer position into an internship, contact us once you apply and we can discuss the possibility of an internship.
Skill Development
Camp Carl is a hands-on learning environment that not only provides deep spiritual growth, but invaluable life and job skills to EQUIP you for any future career. In a summer at Camp, our staff gain more than 700 hours of on-the-job training in problem-solving, work ethic, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and team work dynamics. Through focused mentorship from the Camp Director, Unit Leaders, and their peers, staff acquire tangible life experiences in leadership, self-discipline, and team dynamics. By sharpening skills and developing character, we prepare and equip our staff for whatever God has called them to next!
Summer Schedule & Contracts
Camp Carl Summers are broken into 3 terms of 3 weeks each. Contracts will be written starting at a minimum one-term commitment, with options of a two-term contract or a full-term contract. All summer staff will be required to attend staff training in addition to their agreed-upon contract. Starting on June 8, the camp week runs from Sunday to Friday.
